KUALA LUMPUR: SJK(C) Jalan Davidson is the first school in Malaysia to be closed after an 11-year-old student testing positive on Friday for the Influeza A(H1N1) was found to have transmitted the virus to two classmates.

Safari numbers still dwarfed by Firefox downloads → news.cnet.com

Apple has been desperately trying to turn Safari into a mainstream browser player. Unfortunately, its numbers simply don’t compare to Firefox.

Safari 4.0 notched 11 million downloads in just three days. While significant, this number is almost a rounding error compared with Firefox 3.0.11, which pulled down 150 million downloads in just 24 hours, as Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler reports.

A team of scientists say they have evidence that a “super volcano” may be brewing underneath Mount St. Helens, NewScientist.com reports.

Researchers say indicators suggest Mount St. Helens and other northwest volcanoes are plugged into a huge subterranean pool of magma that could one day burst to the surface in a “super” eruption.

Microsoft's Free Antivirus: Is This An Apology? → pcworld.com

Who should know more about PC threats than the company whose software makes most of them possible? Is Microsoft’s upcoming, free anti-malware app the company’s way of apologizing to customers?

Not hardly. The free service, codenamed “Morro” and due in beta “soon,” appears only after years of Microsoft trying and failing to sell a protection product called “OneCare,” which routinely landed low in the protection ratings.

For Pakistanis, a Fight Against Their Own → washingtonpost.com

PATALIAN, Pakistan — The body of Mohammed Sajad lies buried in the sandy soil of the village cemetery, beneath a lonely Pakistani flag that flies crisply in the sweltering air.

He died, his father explains, a soldier’s death, shot in the back after his Pakistani army unit marched into a trap in the Swat Valley. Recovering the body took four days because of the ferocity of Taliban sniper fire. It will take Sajad’s father far longer to understand why Pakistan is waging war with its own people.

Apple's new MacBook Pros can boot from media in SD card slot → appleinsider.com

Apple’s new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros introduced this week feature an SD (Secure Digital) card slot primarily for reading and writing media files to SD cards, but this tiny slot can also serve as a lifesaver, allowing you to boot from an SD card during a state of emergency.

In a tech note published this week summarizing uses and compatibility for the SD slots, Apple notes that you can install Mac OS X on an SD card and use it as a startup volume simply by changing the default partition table to GUID using Disk Utility, and then formating the card to use the Mac OS Extended file format.

Good News to All Apple Fans Out There! → pcmag.com

Perhaps the biggest price bomb dropped at WWDC was that the existing 8GB iPhone 3G now costs just $99. Starting now. Way to pee on the Palm Pre parade, which is still $299 with a $100 rebate. Here Apple will have its cake and eat it too: High-end Apple fanatics will snatch up the iPhone 3G S, while value customers can still get in for the price of a BlackBerry Curve. If you’re an AT&T subscriber, there is no longer any reason not to get an iPhone. Well, as long as you’re cool with the virtual keyboard.

Where does the iPhone 3G S get its speed? → reviews.cnet.com

So, where does the Apple iPhone 3G S get its claimed “2x faster” leap in speed? Rumors are rampant that Apple is using a new chip to crank up the performance.

Why rumors when Apple has already announced the iPhone 3G S? Apple doesn’t disclose chip-level hardware specifications. Moreover, Apple clearly wants to convince any prospective buyer than it’s not the iPhone’s individual parts that matter but the Apple-branded whole.
